Installation (bootloader?) issue for LL 8.0 on Lenovo Thinkpad T14s Gen 2

I try to install LL8.0 on a Lenovo Thinkpad T14s Gen 2.

Secure BIOS is disabled.
LL8.0 image created by Etcher.
I try a clean install: "erase" - swap (no hibernate), encrypted, only LL8.0 (no dual boot).
System creates 3 partitions:
- EFI system - FAT32
- rootfs - LUKS
- swap - LUKS


During install, I end up with this error message:
The bootloader could not be installed. The installation command <pre>grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot/efi --bootloader-id=Linux_Lite --force</pre> returned error code 1.


I tried on 2 different SSD drives in the same laptop with same results (first drive had Win11 on it, the second drive was completely empty).
I tried again on a Lenovo M715Q-MT with Ryzen 5 2400GE with same error message. Later smooth install of LL7.8 on this machine.

I tried Valtam's suggestion to update Calamares:
"New Calamares build uploaded.

At first, the terminal wouldn't take it (no sources available). I had to manually update Lite Sources.
It then accepted to update Calamares. I then tried a new install, and this time got a simple error message "Installation failed", no further code or information.


On the T14s only, I tried Serban S solution to first install LL 7.8 (which went fine), then from there upgrade to LL 8.0.
What I ended up with was weird, everything looked like LL8.0 (new desktop, theme, software ...), but the new "About Lite" would still say it's running LL7.8, and I still have Chrome as default browser ... like if I was stuck somewhere in between both versions.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I tried a 5th (or6th?) time to install from Live USB, and it worked. I noticed later that it's because I forgot to tick "encrypt" during install.
So it may be something related with encryption.
Upon realizing my mistake, I tried to reinstall again from Live USB (remembering to tick "encrypt" this time), and got a new error message:

Good news: both errors you hit are already known and fixed. You actually diagnosed the main one yourself when you noticed the install only succeeded with Encrypt unticked.

Here’s what was going on:

1. grub-install ... error code 1 (encrypted installs) — Calamares wasn’t setting up the LUKS boot chain, so GRUB had no way to embed the crypto modules it needs to read /boot from inside the encrypted root. That’s the exit code 1. If you’d pushed past it, it would have dropped to a BusyBox/initramfs prompt for the same reason. Fixed.

2. “failed to create partition” (mkfs.fat/fsck.fat) — the live session was auto-mounting the EFI partition the instant Calamares created it, before it could be formatted. You can see it in your own log: nvme0n1p1 vfat /run/media/linux/7454-DA07 already mounted. Also fixed.

The Calamares build you dpkg-i’d earlier was an interim one — it cleared the partition problem, which is why the second attempt got further and just said “Installation failed” with no code, but it didn’t yet contain the encryption fix. The version that fixes everything is calamares-settings-linuxlite 8.0-0110.
To grab it, boot the Live USB, open a terminal, refresh Lite Sources, then:

Since you’ve been through several failed attempts, wipe the target drive first so no leftover EFI partition confuses things:

sudo wipefs -a /dev/nvme0n1

Then start the installer and do your clean, encrypted install as before. That should go through cleanly now.

Two things not to worry about:

• The amdgpu/drm_crtc_wait_one_vblank trace in your log is a harmless kernel warning on your Vega graphics during the console switch — it recovers on its own and has nothing to do with the install failing.

• I’d skip the “install 7.8 then upgrade” route for now — that’s what left you half-way between versions (About still showing 7.8, Chrome still default). A clean 8.0 install with the updated Calamares is the way to go.

Hi Jerry, thanks for your help here.
I followed your 3 steps. 
I had some difficulties with the second command ("no such file or directory", then "permission denied"), but managed to get it to work.

The install ended up with the error message "Installation failed" no code, no info.
I decided to ignore it and restart thinking that's what you meant by "pushed past it".

Upon boot, I'm asked for my encryption password (for the first time), it accepts it, unfortunately, It then get stuck by the spinning feather screen. (I tried to boot twice, and waited for around 20 mins each time to no avail).

It took me forever to find it, then I couldn't copy/paste it even in admin mode with all permissions on Read and write, so I opened it and copy/pasted the content into an empty file. I hope it works for you as intended

Hi!

I read the logfile.
As far as I could understand, the error shows from Line 1040 and it states that the system was unable to unmount the encrypted partitions.
Anyway, the setup went as far as partitioning the system as required, set up the user, user pwd,  the autologin option and wrote the bootloader into /boot/efi (FAT32) partition.
It also started the LL slideshow. I assume that the files were copied and post-install settings were made.
After this point, there was the attempt to unmount the (encrypted) partitions and the error ocured.
I never used such a scenario so I can't figure out why the unmount command failed ("Device or resource busy").
The message means that there were still write operations ongoing or at some point something went wrong and the system entered a loop write or read and kept the device busy, preventing the execution of the "umount".
The only cause I see here, is a bad sector (cluster?) on one of the encrypted devices. This usually triggers a read loop that might keep the device busy, thus the error "Installation failed: "Could not close encrypted partition on the target system." " was triggered.
Maybe there is someone here who knows what can cause the "umount" failure.
The log says that the encryption password was saved and used successfully at some point.

Finally, the question is:

How reliable is the target medium?
You need to start the GParted Live and perform a full check of the drive.
You might also need to use GSmartcontrol to perform a diagnostic on the drive.
Without knowing the state of the drive, it is unlikely to discover what happens.
We need to rule out the "Bad sectors" scenario in order to go beyond that error.

Hi Serban, 

I couldn't figure out how to get GParted to check the drive.
I installed Gsmartcontrol and ran the extended self-test, result bellow.

FYI, I have tried to install LL8.0 on a total of 3 different drives inside 2 different machine.
I remember having used the built-in Lenovo drive health check utility in the BIOS when I just got the laptop (meaning the previous/first SSD drive in this machine), no error were found.
Bellow is the result of Gsmartcontrol on the second SSD drive that is currently in the laptop.

Hi Joe,

Thanks for sending through the installer log — it pinned the problem down exactly, and it turned out to be a good-news / bad-news situation.

The good news: your install is actually getting almost all the way to the finish. The log shows the bootloader installed cleanly (no more “error code 1”), the encrypted root and swap were set up, the initramfs was built and your user account created — everything that matters is written to disk.

The bad news is right at the very last step. When Calamares finishes, it tidies up by closing the encrypted partitions it opened during the install — but it was closing the encrypted swap without switching it off first, so the kernel still had it in use and the close failed:

Because that final cleanup step errored, Calamares declared the whole install “failed” — even though the system on disk was already complete. So it was really a false alarm at the finish line, and it only hits encrypted installs that use swap. That is also why your unencrypted installs went through fine.

I’ve fixed it in calamares-settings-linuxlite 8.0-0120: the installer now switches the encrypted swap off before closing it, so the cleanup completes normally. The change does nothing on unencrypted installs, so no other setups are affected.

To pick it up, boot the Live USB but don’t launch the installer yet:

1.  Open a terminal and run:

2.  Your earlier attempts left partial encrypted headers on the drive, so wipe them first for a clean start (check with lsblk that /dev/nvme0n1 really is the internal drive):

3.  Launch the installer and run through it as normal with Encrypt system ticked.

One more thing you spotted in the log — the amdgpu ... drm_crtc_wait_one_vblank backtrace. That one is harmless: it’s a known cosmetic kernel warning on your Ryzen’s Vega graphics when the console switches modes, it self-recovers (“end trace”), and it has nothing to do with the install failing. You can safely ignore it.

Give that a go and let me know how you get on.

Yet, I had some questions regarding the use of SWAP. (I have 16 GB of RAM...).

Now, I was confused. At first, when I saw the lines above I didn't understand why would the installer use the SWAP...

So I re-read the first lines of the session.log to check the amount of RAM: I found 2 GB and a little further on, "Recommended SWAP size 8 GB".
That cleared up the things. Kernel had to use SWAP in order to go on with the install.

Thanks again for the detailed explanations! That will help me pinpoint any further trouble regarding the Radeon 480 M chipset, although it seems the trouble has been solved. As it looks so far...
