In June 2025, I installed Linux Lite 7.4 on a 2007 laptop, replacing the hard drive with a SATA ST916082 1AS (3.2 GB).
The laptop didn't support this hardware configuration, especially the browser, any downloads, etc.; my session would crash, and I'd log out with data loss.
After several months of daily driver, firmware, and other updates, not only does the operating system handle large amounts of data without a hitch, but it does so as quickly as modern computers.

Hi, everyone!

Since I had trouble since the beginning of this new story, I belive we can help solving them.

1. UTF-8 compliance.

As anyone can see, my name is Șerban Stănescu. The User Name, is "Șerban S."
Having more than 29 years of computer practice, it is highly unlikely for me to "forget" my login credentials.
Yet, i was unable to login!
It took me almost 150 minutes to find a solution to login. This is by all means, unacceptable.
Finally, i discovered that the PHP login script, expects instead of "Ș", the ASCII code ( &#350 ).
I don't know what about you, but I'm sure I'm not a computer, by all means. So, how was i supposed to guess what the hell the login script expected from me and what the error message meant?
Nevertheless, I was persistent enough to discover this.
So, if there is anyone in this situation, just search for the ASCII code of the character (LibreOffice, Special Characters, KeyDown) and replace it in the login window. Something like this:

"&#350"
Remember to end the tag with ";".
I omitted the semicolon because it is impossible to put the whole HTML TAG string without getting it replaced with the special character. Weird behavior, to say the least!

The same issue can be generated by the System Font(s), if it is an old ISO definition, such as "Courier New Western". All fonts have to be UTF-8 compliant.

2. Ranking icons.

As you can see, my ranking icons show as placeholders.
Since on my forum I replaced some default icons with others, I came across this.
First possible cause is the size of the image.
The standard size and file format, can be obtained from the "Star" icon, which shows correctly.
For any other file, whatever image would that be, it has to have the same format. If it's a .gif has to be converted to .png, and so on, depending on the default format. There should be a mention regarding supported formats and possibly, the size.
Same program that converts, can resize it to the size of the Star icon. So, say if this is "Star.ico" or maybe "Star.gif" and 16px, then all other ranking icons in the script directory, have to stick to this size and file format.
I'm pretty sure that only Jerry can fix that, since it is done at hosting level, using some FTP (FileZilla, for one) or maybe the web app of the hosting. Both work fine, i used both.
After fixing, a full backup is required. After this, in case of need, only the changed directories need (eventually) to be restored.

3. Forum Menu

Now, the Forum Menu, has links for "New Posts", "Today's Posts". Both return an empty string.
While for "Today's Posts" this might be true, for "New Posts", I highly doubt that, unless the time stamp or range is set to "0". If so, what's the use of this link?
I guess this can be solved at Admin level, since there has to be some time string to set the interval in the querry string of the Forum Settings.

Hi All,

As noted in a previous forum thread, the installer won't let you install with less than 16.5GB of drive space. But, the minimum requirements listed say 8GB.

Is there a way to do a more minimal install? I ran 'live' off a usb drive and everything looked great, but I don't need the office apps, thunderbird, etc.

At a minimum, can the minimum requirements be changed to reflect the reality of the installer?

I really like Linux Lite and it seems plenty 'lite' enough to run on my old laptop. Just wish I could install it!

Thanks,

Hi,

Probably the people of the staff of this forum is not same who devs, publishes in the website of Linux Lite
but Why not promote itself in every Social Media (Discord, tik tok, Instagram, etc)
how good is Linux Lite 6.6? is it not enough a "mature" Linux project?
Why not at least a Discord with more feedback and grow a lively community...
why not publish memes with info related to Linux?

In my case like any average Linux user of not the latest hardware I always was afraid of Unity, and everytime I thought of any distro similar to Ubuntu it always had Unity and so heavy software, but that's not the case of Linux Lite 6.6 and surprisingly is perhaps the best OS for not the latest computer.

Well, basically there are 2 kind of Linux Lite users one with "minimalistic philosophy" and another with OLD hardware.

And we know when WinXP died Linux grew up with more users,
but this time is "more promising", because nearly at the same time we have some other "events":

-Not only Windows 10 will receive no more support in October 2025, in July 2024 Debian 11 will also "die out". Context, Debian 12 is the latest stable release but it only support the latest Nvidia graphic drivers, AMD for Debian users is not the best choice the latest driver were made in 2015, Debian AMD users share the same driver.. (https://wiki.debian.org/AtiHowTo )

-Not many people know about how good is Linux Lites even with some minor bugs.

I hope people in the staff would think about it, in 2024 without a strong Social Media, a big community will be forever unknown... so not a possible option to try this OS

Hi,

I've tried many years Debian distros thinking it'd be the fastest ever Desktop (PC), Laptop..
But finally with the same "Debian" PC I tried Linux Lite 6.6, and my computer is running really well, even much better with the latest Debian distro I tried. Sincerely I always was afraid of Unity plus Ubuntu heavy software which always made my PC so slow...

although Linux Lite is something different and I think more people should know it

But everyone use a computer with software... and because Linux Lite is not a "pure" Ubuntu "child" not every software is available, not every people have the patience to try and get the right Linux Lite packages.

So my suggestion is that :a main section of recommended software for Linux Lite should be opened at least in this forum.

For example, even after I installed flatpak, snap through Synaptic and Software Gnome Center, Waterfox is not really available for Linux Lite happily Libre Wolf were ok.

If that goes well, people also could share how they configure that software "hidden" :fingerscrossed for Linux Lite users

Hi Guys,
I'm newbies in linux and found out Linux Lite and I think I'll love this Distro

I hope you don't mind if I post what I was thinking in my first login :
1. what do you think if the height of dockbar a little bit more taller
2. The Default menu font size, I think it's a little bit too thicker
but the Idea how the menu was organized is very very Cool :045: for newbies I'm really really love the file manager way :048:

If you allow me to post, next time I'll write you what I see in this Distro and hopefully it can make some contribution for you, but once again I'm newbies so please forgive me if I'm wrong and sorry for my bad English.

Thanks for the this Amazing Distro

ConvertAll is very convenient software which allows the user to juggle any unit known to mankind (thermal, mass, weight, length, surface... whatever you name it), either Imperial or IS (metrics), or even less common ones. It's available on several distros (Ubuntu, Zorin OS, Linux Mint...) and even on Win. I was very surprised not to find it on LL.

It's possible to install it from the designer website https://convertall.bellz.org/download.html, but it's rather bothersome.

Why not adding it to LL software data base ?
