  I need help with samba
Posted by: Phobos84 - 03-02-2019, 11:27 PM - Forum: Network - Replies (15)

Hello,

I really need some help.  For whatever reason I struggle with samba every time I have to do anything with it.  This time though I am totally lost.  So I had an old P4 PC with an older version of Linux Lite that was set up as a media server.  After about 40 hours of messing with samba I got it to be visible and accessible by any computer on my network.  All was well until I upgraded to a new computer and installed the new version of Lite.  I can't get the network to work at all.  It can be seen by other computers but not accessed.  I have two hard drives in the computer.  On has the operating system and the other has the files I need to share on the network.  This is my smb.conf file

Code:
#======================= Global Settings ====================================
[global]
workgroup = WORKGROUP
server string = Linux Lite Shares
netbios name = Server
security = user
encrypt passwords = true
username map = /etc/samba/smbusers
map to guest = bad user
guest account = nobody
dns proxy = no
#======================= Share Definitions ===================================
[Server]
path = /media/chad2/backup/shares
available = yes
valid users = %U %G
write list = %U
browsable = yes
public = yes
writable = yes
guest ok = yes
read only = no
printable = yes
locking = no
strict locking = no

I'm clueless, any ideas?

I live in Mexico now. After latest install, in File Manager all the times and dates are in Spanish. Also the Calendar at bottom right of Taskbar. I can't find out where to change this back to English.

  Firewall (Gufw) settings
Posted by: Yoru3 - 03-01-2019, 12:25 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (2)

Previously I've had no problem installing and using miniDLNA on my local network, when I was using an old 32 bit notebook machine, several LL versions ago.
However, I've now tried to make miniDLNA a server on my main 64bit LL 4.2 machine, and I'm having problems.
I installed it from Synaptics, and it appears to be running as a server.

Code:
sudo service --status-all
I've also got sqlite3 installed, and after the /etc/minidlna.conf configuration has done the usual
Code:
sudo service minidlna restart
Code:
sudo service minidlna force-reload
Which has created the database, where I told it to, although the log does list some warning. Which I might need to get back to.
However, my client/controller machine (notepad) cannot see the server, and only sees the renderers.
Finally I realised that this is probably due to the server firewall, which is now by default set to ON.
In order to allow miniDLNA to work, I believe I have to open the TCP port 8200, and the UDP port 1900.
Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a tutorial on the firewall yet (hint)

So, can anyone help on exactly how to open those port up, and ideally only to the local network.
Many thanks in advance.

  Linux Lite OS 3.8 update help
Posted by: PsaCrypt - 03-01-2019, 11:16 AM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (8)

Hello to all members,

I'm using Linux Lite OS 3.8 loading .Iso DVD image from hard disk (Live-HD mode).  Because Ubuntu features I updated all my system, with the exception of booting kernel, wich remains at 16.04.4 release.  Loading .Iso image from hard disk boots original Lite 3.8 kernel into readonly file system (/cdrom).

I want to know how I can update vmlinuz and initrd.gz files, doing commands into a separate folder to get these files updated to 16.04.6 kernel release.  I suppossed task is related to update-initramfs command.

Anyone can help me?

Thank you in advance.  ;-)

  suddenly asking for login on startup and not accepting root password
Posted by: kris84 - 03-01-2019, 01:33 AM - Forum: Start up and Shutdown - Replies (7)

I have been using Linuxlite for a few years now and am currently using 4.0. I installed it last fall and haven't had any issues with it. Until today. This morning I shut down my computer normally, but when I turned it back on this evening, it asked me to login on startup; I had it set to log me in automatically, so I thought this was weird. But then it wouldn't accept my password. I made sure caps and numlock weren't on but it still won't let me in. I haven't done anything unusual lately or noticed any strange behavior until this happened. Can someone tell me what is going on? Have I been hacked? What can I do to get back into my computer?

  Is there a way to access BIOS on a used Lenovo Ideapad G580 2689 ?
Posted by: m654321 - 02-27-2019, 08:34 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (11)

Following the death of my Asus laptop, I swapped it with someone for a third-hand Lenovo Ideapad G580 model 2689 notebook. It has Win8.1 pre-installed in UEFI mode - I would like to dual-boot it with LL, in Legacy mode.

However I'm unable to access the BIOS or Boot Order to allow me to do this.
The 'novo' button doesn't work, only showing a menu with 4 options - clicking on any of the options and it just boots into the Win8.1 user account. Apparently the software that allows the 'novo' button to access BIOS or Boot Order, is on a partition of the drive that was originally shipped with this laptop - being a 3rd-hand laptop, my guess is that's long gone!

So I tried more conventional methods: F2 and F12 keys, and clicking on PC settings in the charms bar, choosing the Recovery etc option. However none of these work and it just boots into the Win8.1 user account.

However, from the LL hardware database, I notice that LL has been installed on the Lenovo G580, but maybe these contained original drive to enable operation of the 'novo' button ... I also notice from hadrian's inxi -Fz terminal output, that he installed LL on a Lenovo G580.

Any ideas, send them this way before I throw this laptop in the bin  >Sad >Sad >Sad

  Is Canon mx922 Airprint compatible?
Posted by: Sergy - 02-27-2019, 04:40 PM - Forum: Printing and Scanning - No Replies

Is Canon mx922 Airprint compatible and where can I download it ? Many of us take some answers for granted, while for others they are definitely unknowable. So I want to support with some information for those who want to know if compatible Canon mx922 printer with Airprint.

[Image: AirPrint-300x300.png]

First answer the answer quickly:
Is Canon mx922 Airprint compatible ?
YES, Airprint is compatible with the Canon MX922 Printer. Happy ?  Big Grin

I guess it's a great answer for you right now, and that's good. We find this answer without problem in the Official Canon Page https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/explore/printing-innovations/mobile-printing/airprint in section: "The following printers are equipped with this Feature"

Remember that with your Canon MX922 printer you can use Wi-Fi connectivity to print from your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch. Important: It is not necessary to install canon mx922 drivers, but if you need them you can download here:https://www.canondriversoft.com/2018/10/...inter.html.

As simple as that, it is only necessary to connect the printer with your device and that's it. For this you can see the official canon tutorial to connect Airprint Here:http://www.canon.ca/support_images/KB_Im...nt_NEW.pdf

Ok, I already learned that Canon Mx922 printer is compatible with Airprint, but, what is AirPrint ?. AirPrint is Apple's wireless printing technology. Allows you to print from any Apple device to an AirPrint compatible computer.

There is all the necessary information about AirPrint I hope that this summary is complete and useful for you.

  Password not accepted
Posted by: pelouk - 02-27-2019, 03:57 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (1)

I recently installed LL 3.8 on to an Asus 1225B laptop - mostly without a hitch.

Had a slight problem with the keyboard being a bit scrambled but sorted this out by referring to other forum posts on the topic.

When subsequently trying to access Lite Software, Install/Remove, etc for which my password is required, the authentication process does not accept my password.

I suspect that this may be  due to the original keyboard hiccup during the installation but I don't know how to get around this. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.
