in File manager having DEVICES, PLACES NETWORK show

I'm cleaning up a laptop that was placed with a student and noticed that when I open the administrator file manager file it NO LONGER shows the dark grey part on the left side where it lists DEVICE, PLACES, NETWORK. I would like to get this back, but I've tried seeing if it's hidden (meaning the items side is pulled right over to the left side), but there's no ability to "pull" on the left side and expose this dark grey area. Have a look at the two screen shots I have - one is from another laptop running LL 3.8 and then this one also running LL 3.8.
Does anyone know how I can get the grey left side back?

Howdy folks,
I have a 1tb Western Digital Passport external HDD, I purchased it 2 years ago before I installed Linux Lite and dual booting with W7. The Passport has less than 900 megabytes used and what I want to accomplish is dividing the space evenly in half and using one formatted in ext 4 so I can use it for time-shift. I have read almost everything Gparted has on their website and followed tutorials but I am unable to complete the process for some reason, an error window comes up stopping the process. Is there anyone out here in the forum who has some knowledge going through the process of partitioning an external HDD using Gparted?
Best regards,

Hi,
New user here, sorry if this is in the wrong section of the forum...
I wanted to setup a Wireguard client VPN connection but was faced with a message that the plugin was not installed.
I found a thread in the Installing Software section titled "NetworkManager won't see Wireguard-based VPN New" from January 28, 2021.
However when I click on that title it takes me back to page one of the section. I can open other threads without a problem.
TIA

Linux Lite von CHIP empfohlen

Die bekannte Computerzeitschrift CHIP hat Linux Lite online am 5. April als "genügsame" Alternative zu Windows 11 empfohlen:
https://www.chip.de/news/Wenn-Windows-zu...29388.html
For our english speaking guests a short excerpt:
Quote:The system requirements of Windows 11 have increased significantly compared to the predecessor and prevent many users from upgrading. Although the system also runs on older hardware via workarounds, this is not necessarily the best solution. If you want to continue using older devices with up-to-date software, the resource-saving alternative Linux Lite might be something for you. Based on Ubuntu LTS, the free operating system is primarily aimed at Windows migrants.
According to the own Webpage of CHIP:
Quote:CHIP is Germany's largest consumer portal. We have been informing and advising everyone in the German-speaking world since 1996 with the latest news, comprehensive buying advice and honest tests on products of all kinds.

Installer crash - Non UTF characters in SSD Name

Hi Team,
When attempting to install LL 6.x or 5.8 from desktop installer, I get a known installer crash installing on an old low spec Dell Wyse 3040. Ubiquity crashes because it finds a non-UTF character in the SSD model name (MMC H8G4a\x92). Unfortunately this appears to be common on all Ubuntu flavours that use ubiquity installer with this particular device. Note that LL 6.0 happens to work fine from live usb (albeit a little slow).
As the SSD is soldered/non replaceable, this becomes a barrier for any try at permanent installing of any Ubuntu-based distro that uses a ubiquity install process.
Details of the ubiquity error here -
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1405081/...-wyse-3040
https://github.com/dcantrell/pyparted/issues/76
I have tried all the work arounds but ubiquity references the SSD model name throughout the install and I don't have the knowledge about ubiquity to fix it.
The good news is that using the new Flutter/sububiquity installer when trying Ubuntu 23.04 Lunar Lobster beta works perfectly without crashing. Info on the new installer here :-
https://9to5linux.com/first-look-at-ubun...in-flutter
My problem is that I need a minimal distro XFCE rather than GNOME interface on this low spec device and Linux Lite is my goto choice as it is simply the best!
My questions are:-
(1) Has anyone found a workaround to this specific problem for Linux Lite (ubiquit) install on a Dell Wyse 3040?
(2) Will LL (7?) be using the flutter/sububiquity installer in future releases that are based on Ubuntu 23?

I have installed Windows 10 and Linux Lite 6.4 on my old Desktop PC - Dual boot.
There is no problem of sound in Windows 10 operating system, but sound does not work in Linux Lite 6.4 OS.
I wasted almost 5 hours to resolve this issue, but no success.
When I hover mouse over the volume icon in the system tray, it shows "muted."
I humbly request you to help me to find out resolution to aforesaid issue.

I accidentally turned off my USB logitech mouse in the mouse and touchpad section of settings and now I haven't a way to navigate through my desktop because the touchpad and mouse are turned off. When I restart my machine the mouse works and allows me to sign in but after when the desktop comes up the mouse is off as well as the touchpad. Please help
