Posted by: joejohnston3 - 05-14-2014, 02:56 AM - Forum: Suggestions and Feedback - Replies (8)

Hi All,

I just had to state how frighteningly brilliant Linux Lite is!! Valtam has done a phenomenal and amazing job and it blows my mind the more I discover about it. The nuances and details are truly incredible and I am so thankful to have and be using this distro. It is now going to be my recommended distro for my customers and I hope to be able to assist the project in the future. Thank you for an amazing gift to the Linux community.

  PAE vs non-PAE kernel
Posted by: joejohnston3 - 05-14-2014, 02:50 AM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (3)

Hi All,

One quick question. My laptop has a max of 4gigs RAM and I was wondering if there is/was any advantage of using the PAE over the non-PAE kernel. I installed the PAE out of habit but wanted to check with you all on the pros-cons of the kernels for my system. Thank you.

Installing and Using a USB ATSC TV Card with Me TV in Linux Lite
Posted by: N4RPS - 05-13-2014, 08:13 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (6)

Hello, All!

Having used a Hauppauge WinTV USB dongle in Windows 7/8, I've noticed that the software produced by them just doesn't work very well. You're lucky to get it to work an entire hour without it 'locking up' on you.

For the sake of curiosity, I wanted to see if it worked better in Linux, and found that this device works MUCH better in Linux. My guess is that it's because the CPU workload for Linux itself is far less in Linux than in Windows 7 or 8, as trying to do this sort of thing is very processor-intensive.

This is my experience with installing and using this dongle with the Me TV software, which will detect many types of TV cards. First, I installed the needed software. Using a terminal window, I added the Me TV PPA like this:

Code:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:me-tv-development/ppa

I then typed the following:

Code:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install dvb-apps w-scan me-tv

After installing the software, all I had to do was plug in the dongle, rebooted, and fired up Me TV. On a couple of my laptops, everything was pretty much automatic. It gave me the option to automatically scan for over-the-air channels. Using an amplified antenna, it detected 25 channels in my area.

With a couple of other laptops, I was asked to select a channels.conf file to configure the channel list. To create this list, I had to use the scan command in a terminal window to create this file. The syntax is as follows:

Code:
scan /usr/share/dvb/atsc/us-ATSC-center-frequencies-8VSB >channels.conf

This lets the scan command use the dongle to scan every US digital channel to find the ones used in one's area, and to create a channels.conf file in the home directory. One can then select this file to load the channels into Me TV. (In the /usr/share/dvb directory, there are some sample channels.conf files for detecting cable TV channels and ATSC digital channels for a few major US cities.)

Other here use MythTV to do this, but doing so requires one to either compile everything from source or install Mythbuntu. I was not able to make either solution work - Me TV was FAR easier.

May this help others in the future...

  Wireless does not connect automatically
Posted by: roscol - 05-13-2014, 03:05 AM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (3)

Whenever the computer is rebooted (or logged off and on) the user needs to reconnect to the Wireless network. Furthermore when they try to do so they are asked for an admin password. Given they are a standard user this is not possible.

Auto login an account with a blank password
Posted by: roscol - 05-12-2014, 10:51 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (6)

I have an account that I wish to auto login with. I have found the docs that tell me how do to this but all of them say you need to enter the account's password. As the account in question does not have a password (and I don't want it to have one) this appears to be problematic.

Any ideas?

  rDesktop, seamless mode and other...
Posted by: Giuseppe_Chillemi - 05-12-2014, 09:28 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (1)

Hi,
I have installed rDektop to replace Remmina because rDesktop RDP keyboard is correct while Remmina is not.

rDeksktop has a seamless mode which integrates the remote Windows desktop with Linux Lite desktop but I have one issue: the Linux Lite launch bar is over the Windows launch bar so I can't press the "start button".
At the top of the windows desktop I find a black bar which is similar in size to the launch bar of Linux lite. As far I understand the Remote Desktop should open with an offesset to see it bar. Otherwise I can imagine that the top black strip is for the Ubuntu menu' bar...

Which editor could I use to edit a bash script to start rDesktop ?

A last question: one of passwords of my RDP users contains a "!" inside. How to enter the whole password in bash including this char? "AABB!CCDD" (including in double quotes) does not seem to work.

  Regards,
    Giuseppe Chillemi

  Puzzle Type Game
Posted by: lindalinex4me - 05-12-2014, 07:53 PM - Forum: Games Support - No Replies

Hello...I am running Linux Lite and downloaded a game from this site:  http://www.pcgaming.ws/viewgame.php?game=tetpus  The game is Tetpus and I got it to run after extracting by clicking the "Open with Wine Windows Program Loader" I was so excited that it actually worked and I was able to play the game.  I closed it and went on to other less important things  ;D and the next time I opened it, I got a little box that said "Bitmap Missing".  I could still play the game except it was now in boring black with white borders.  I "extracted" it again and was able to play it in color until I closed it and came back later.  Same thing happened  "Bitmap Missing".  My question is how can I get the "missing bitmap or is there some kind of "setting"  I need for this game?  Thanks to whoever responds.  It is not a big deal really...I can take it or leave the game...it's just a nice simple "no bells or whistles" little game.

I clicked on Help in Bluetooth Devices and was connected to -- http://blueman-project.org/forum . If I click on Help Manual it takes me to Linux-Lite manual  but if I Click on Forum I was taken to -- https://bbs.linuxdistrocommunity.com/for...php?fid=62 .

Please could someone arrange for the  links to be updated to the correct Site.

As a New user from Windows I do not find the Manual very informative or Linux very user friendly when I experience problems of which I have had too many . Trawling through lots of Topics many of  which often get out of hand and then fail to give an answer or give complicated command line options  .
As Linux-lite is supposed to be  an alternative to Windows XP etc  I did not expect to have to learn Commands to resolve problems . As a 70 year old learning tends to become harder.

I have read other peoples comments that what they want is an Operating System that works behind the scenes to make the necessary connections between the Computer Hardware and the needs of the Program Software  so they can complete the task they want to achieve easily and not have to spend days sorting out the operating system faults first .

Currently I have yet to resolve :-
(1) the Number Lock forced on in Lite but not in Mint (when I tried that)
(2) Cannot get Crome browser as default
(3) Bluetooth device pairing but not connecting to Headset option

Hello all.
Once I installed it on my compaq mini 110 I have start up prob.
On restart or normal start the screen goes blank,I can hear it trying to load without success.
I have to restart it 3-10 times before I get the splash screen and it loads ok.
