Hello fellow users. My first time here at the forums. My name is Shadow. We installed Linux Lite to our main PC(Well I did actually lol) as we don't have the money to upgrade to Windows 7 or 8 or even buy a new PC altogether. Linux seemed to be the only option for us as it's free to download and install sooo, we went with Linux Lite since it's meant to be good with older hardware so far am impressed by it's speedy performance. We've just moved from Windows XP to Linux Lite as it was the only distro we could find that would run on our old PC. It will be our first year with Linux. I do have a question though hope this isn't too much trouble to answer.

Okay so we have one main PC with 3 user accounts. One admin(me) and two normal accounts, the problem is when the other two normal accounts wants to shutdown the pc after use the system keeps asking for my admin password which starting to get annoying for the other two users. How can I make the computer shutdown without the need of my admin password? The version of Linux Lite where using is 1.0.8 32bit on a Dell machine.

Hi, i am new to Linux and just installed LL this morning.
I have 12 years old Pentium 4 (2.4 GHz) that still works like charm (i open it and clean once a year). Good old machine. I know it will run for many years more 
All those years it ran XP.
My sister uses it mostly for social networking and watching clips on YT, and my mum sometimes play solitaire on it.
I use it for extra storage since it has 2 hard discs so i can free some space on my lap. with Win. 7
LL has everything, i like it already and i hope i will learn more about it.

Okay, I've worked with sound for quite a while. I can show output activity on both Clementine and VLC, but nothing's coming out of the mobo sound port. I've checked the wiring, and that's ok. I've checked all the selections (volume, output devices, configuration, PulseAudio Volume Control, Audio Mixer, the stereo receiver it's plugged into) and all looks ok, but theres..no..sound. Sysinfo file is attached. Any suggestions are welcome, thanks.

Well, on Thursday, April 17th, Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr was formally released by Canonical, the people behind the Ubuntu family of Linux distributions. In addition to a new Ubuntu, a new Kubuntu (KDE), Lubuntu (LXDE), and Xubuntu (XFCE) were all released. For the first time, ALL are LTS releases. This means 5-year support for all - in other words, at least through April 2019.

With this latest Ubuntu version being released, it also means that LL 2.0 should also be released within a few months. One need not upgrade LL just because a new version comes out; a lot of people still use 1.0.6 despite 1.0.8 being available, and the current version of LL will continue to be supported for the next three years. Besides, until an upgrade path is developed (which generally makes a mess of things anyway), a 'clean install' is needed to install newer versions - IOW, a LOT of work reinstalling everything - ESPECIALLY if you've REALLY 'tricked things out'!

I've been busy with other matters lately. Therefore, I've downloaded the ISOs of interest to me, but haven't used any of them yet. If any of YOU *HAVE*, what do YOU think about them???

I have a Blu Dash 4.5 Android version 4.2.1 Kernel version 3.4.5. It has the tether plus bluetooth WI-FI hotspot all
there. Linux lite see it but does not get ff to work. What do I need to do to get it to work?

I don't plan on using Steam.
Is there a way to remove it?

So.... I thought I would try to run a LiveCD session of Linux Lite on the older of my two laptops.  It is a Dell Inspiron 8600 with an Intel Pentium M 1.5GHz CPU and 512Gb of RAM.  Old, but not ancient, and it works fine with XP (I'm not into gaming or other heavy-demand high-speed usage).

Didn't get past first base. The live session wouldn't load.  Instead I got a message which said "This kernel requires the following features not present on the CPU:  pae.  Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU".

Now as far as I am concerned a kernel is what you find inside a nut.  That's all.

Do I conclude that I can't run, or install, Linux Lite on this computer?  Period?  Or if I do want to run some sort of Linux OS, do I have to go for one that is as old and obsolete as the laptop seems to be?  If so that's depressing.  I  had until now believed that Linux would work well on older machines that were unable to cope with increasingly resource-hungry versions of the Windows OS.

Is there a way forward that doesn't require serious geek qualifications?  I just want to get an alternative to XP which works more-or-less straight off.  Like wanting to drive a car just by sitting in it, turning on the ignition, and using the controls in front of me -  not having to tune the engine, adjust the carbs, and fiddle with the spark plugs before I even turn the key!

I am still trying to be optimistic about Linux, and I'm keen to learn.  But I can only work with the hardware I've got, and it isn't looking easy at the moment...

I am still in exploratory mode before taking the leap from Windows XP to Linux, and have just encountered another interesting issue.

I have two laptops, both currently running Windows XP.  I'd like to set up either, or both, to dual boot with Linux Lite (or maybe another distro like Zorin?).  So for the moment I thought I would try things out from the Live CD.  But there seem to be issues with both.

The newer of my two laptops - and the one I use daily - is a Dell Inspiron 1520.  It has an Intel Core 2 Duo 2GHz processor.  I can run Linux Lite or Zorin on it in trial mode from a Live CD, and have done so just to see what they look like. 

But (there seems always to be a but...) I have looked at the disk partitions on the laptop.  It seems already to have four partitions:  a 118MB FAT "EISA" (which I believe has something to do with Dell's Recovery/Restore);  the C drive of 227GB NTFS which is the system partition and is doubtless where Windows XP resides along with all my files; then an "Extended Partition" of 2.50GB FAT32 which has no drive letter but is labelled Media Direct and logical drive;  and finally another 3.00GB FAT32 partition labelled "unknown".

I have researched Dell Media Direct, and it seems I have version 3.  I have never used it.  Although I don't understand the jargon,  it is apparently on a 'logical drive' so that it can be booted directly (from a special button on the keyboard) without having to fire up the main OS.  This button apparently messes with, or bypasses, the Master Boot Record.  The good news is that if you are really VERY clever with Linux, you can tweak a dual boot arrangement so as to use that special button instead to boot up Linux.  The bad news is that it is hard if not impossible to remove Dell Media Direct cleanly and totally, and if it remains and you aren't careful, that button can mess up the MBR and/or the "grub" and you end up in infinitely deep trouble.

So I am shying away from installing Linux Lite on this laptop for two reasons.  As there are four partitions on the hard drive already, I'm not sure whether or how Linux can be installed alongside XP as a dual boot.  Is there scope to create the two more partitions (a system one and a swap one) needed for the Linux OS, and can the auto-installer do this?  And even if it can, I assume I would still be left with the Media Direct partition; and the special Media Direct button on the keyboard then becomes like the nuclear button - press it and the screen goes black or the system seizes up.  Not nice.

Can anyone offer advice (in plain English, please) on whether or how to successfully install Linux Lite as dual boot on a machine which has this Dell Media Direct thing lurking on the hard drive?

Meanwhile, I thought about option B - trying to install Linux as a dual boot on my other, even older, laptop.  That's when a curious thing called "pae" (or rather the lack of it) reared its ugly head.  As that's a different problem, I'm posting it in a separate thread.

It's my first and post, I've just installed linux lite and am having trouble setting up wi-fi connection. OS is installed on PC with Belkin RTL8187B USB WiFi Adapter connected /it's recognised in lsusb/ and in network options I have 'wireless is disabled by hardware switch' info. I've tried rfkill unblock all, reseting bios to default, none of which worked for me. rfkill list shows up Soft blocked: no and hard blocked: yes. Please I'd appreciate any help I just need Linux for Chrome browsing after my XP lost it's support.

Another Cairo problem is that the netspeed applet won't connect to the internet port. I checked system info, and found eth0, and entered that into the applet config, but to no avail. What am I missing?
