  Broken Screen Visuals while installing
Posted by: christof1588 - 12-19-2021, 05:44 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (3)

After selecting to install Linux Lite 5.6 on my old computer Intel Core 2 Duo CPU E4500 @ 2.20Ghz x2 and NVIDIA Corp. G86 [GeForce 8500 GT] and 2g of Ram I get black and white diagonal blocks, see attachment. I also tried safe mode. Any ideas?
I'm currently running Linux Mint 18 (32bit).
Thanks in advance.

Grub installation error dring UEFI install
Posted by: Piransu - 12-19-2021, 01:24 AM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - No Replies

I am getting the following error every time I try to UEFI install Linux Lite:

Dec 18 18:58:33 linux grub-installer: grub-install: warning: Cannot set EFI variable Boot0000.
Dec 18 18:58:33 linux grub-installer: grub-install: warning: efivarfs_set_variable: writing to fd 7 failed: Invalid argument.
Dec 18 18:58:33 linux grub-installer: grub-install: warning: _efi_set_variable_mode: ops->set_variable() failed: Invalid argument.
Dec 18 18:58:33 linux grub-installer: grub-install: error: failed to register the EFI boot entry: Invalid argument.
Dec 18 18:58:33 linux grub-installer: error: Running 'grub-install  --force "/dev/sda"' failed.

I have tried direct installing, live disk install, wiped my complete system even. I have secure boot turned off and the there is option for fast boot in the bios.

I am sorry but I am new so I could not get much farther than this. Any help would be appreciated.

  WiFi GUI not working
Posted by: AgentKerbal - 12-16-2021, 08:33 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (2)

Hello all !
I'm running LL 5.6 on a 2015 laptop with 6GB of ram, an Intel 5200U and a GTX 950M.
It's been a couple months since I can't see wifi networks in the menu. The wifi part simply reads "device not ready".
I have already done everything to check if the wireless card works and I even managed to connect to the internet using the terminal. So basically, the wireless card isn't at fault here.
I'm guessing that the easiest way to solve this (or at least try to) would be to reinstall XFCE, which I'm a little scared of doing as I accidentally bricked my whole GUI last summer while messing around with Nvidia drivers. Any suggestion on how to solve this is welcome.
Thanks.

How about adding a native virtual keyboard to Linux Lite?
Posted by: Chompo - 12-15-2021, 06:43 PM - Forum: Suggestions and Feedback - Replies (5)

I just recently had a minor problem with malfunctioning keys in my keyboard and my first instinct as a former/primarily Windows user was to look up for a virtual keyboard under the accessibility menu (then the general menu, then the Help Manual, then Linux Lite Software list), to no avail. I was later able to to install a virtual keyboard thanks to Moltke, who kindly took their time to guide me with a step-by-step installation tutorial through the terminal.

Maybe mine was an unusual issue, but it is my belief virtual keyboards are very a fundamental accessibility feature and should perhaps be shipped with the OS. In case a keyboard malfunctions it can be incredibly hard if not downright impossible to install a virtual keyboard through the terminal if one does not have temporary access to a spare keyboard and/or Internet access. As a matter of fact, as I've been discovering just how handy the terminal can be, I'm convinced a virtual keyboard may be even more valuable on Linux (Lite) than on Windows.

Just to be clear, though, I don't take for granted all the effort that goes into developing this and hope to come off as demanding. I understand it takes time and work to add a new program to an OS, to make it look and feel native and so on. More importantly, I totally understand the importance of a virtual keyboard is just my opinion, an opinion that comes from a very inexperienced user, no less. And if I'm the first one complaining, this is likely not a priority anyway.

Looking for a virtual keyboard in/for Linux Lite.
Posted by: Chompo - 12-14-2021, 10:26 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (3)

Hi, I'm new to both Linux and Linux Lite and would like some help with an issue I'm having. The laptop I currently have Linux Lite on has two malfunctioning keys (b and n), so I'd like to either access Linux Lite's virtual keyboard or set up hotkeys for those letters (something like Fn+v=b, Fn+m=n). The latter solution seems way too complicated to me and even if I were able to do that, a virtual keyboard might also come in handy sometime, so I'd like to find it anyway.

However, I can't seem to find Linux Lite's virtual keyboard anywhere. So far I couldn't find it in the Help Manual; nor under the accessibility menu (which is where I'd find it in Windows); nor in the main menu when searching it both in my native language and English. So then, where can I find a virtual keyboard in Linux Lite, please? Also, in (the unlikely) case there isn't one, how can I install a virtual keyboard for Linux Lite (preferably one that blends well with XFCE)? I couldn't find any in Lite Software's menu.

Thanks in advance!

Suddenly, Linux does not accept my password
Posted by: PullupTerrain - 12-12-2021, 11:36 AM - Forum: Security & Bug Fixes - Replies (5)

Hi all,

I have Linux Lite 3.8, and it was working for months fine. Suddenly, it no longer accepts my password to return from screen saver or to install anything including updates.
I tried to change the password but then it asks for Admin password, which I don't have and I don't know how to set. I prefer not to reinstall this goddamn thing. Especially because this can happen again.
P.s., please, let's not start with cAPS lOCK on issues or dementia-related suggestions.  :005:

P.s. I have already followed the instructions of the Help Manual on how to reset the password. When I reach the point "At the prompt, type passwd 'my username' it says such user does not exist. ???
Thanx

Linux Lite malware detection / protection
Posted by: dentalcher - 12-12-2021, 06:28 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (2)

Hello everyone. I’m not tech-savvy so please pardon me if my concern doesn’t make sense to you. My (work) email address was hacked because I opened an attachment from a very legitimate-looking email sent to me. When I opened it, I was using my other PC (Win10) and accessed my email via cloud. Is there any possibility that my other PC (running only Linux Lite 5.4) might have been infected with malware too because I opened Thunderbird hours after that just to check for new emails (the password wasn’t changed yet at the time)? I didn’t open any attachment. I always perform software updates before doing anything, and safe clean with Lite Tweaks before shutting down. Yesterday, I installed clamAV and clamTk, scanned files and directories, didn’t detect anything. My company suggested Malwarebytes for our devices but I searched, it’s only available for Linux Servers. My PCs are not linked (or not networked if I used the term correctly e.g. I cannot access a file in 1 PC from another). Any suggestions on what else should I do to rest assured that my Linux PC is protected? Thank you in advance!

  Change default browser to chromium?
Posted by: hard swap - 12-10-2021, 12:16 AM - Forum: Suggestions and Feedback - Replies (4)

This is not something that I don't like about Linux Lite. It's more of something I mind about most distros but was hoping maybe this could be an exception.

Because Linux Lite is distributed through a live installer, the storage device used to install it (USB or CD/DVD) will most likely be slower than average, which is why startup time matters. Chromium starts up 2-5 times faster than Firefox from my experience. That is really my only argument in favor of this change, but I see no argument against it (though I may be wrong), so I see no reason other than the fact that simply other distros preferring Firefox, or because it's more traditional, which shouldn't prevent that change from happening. I thought since this distro is one of the only ones that truly prioritises new users and is willing to go through changes and features that no other distro does just to achieve user friendliness, I was hoping that that openness would allow it to become one of the first distros to finally chose another browser than Firefox.

I write all of this with the assumption that speed is the only noticeable difference between the two browsers, and if there is an argument towards Firefox than I probably look very foolish right now  Smile.
