  GRUB
Posted by: Swamp Rat - 10-19-2020, 10:29 PM - Forum: Start up and Shutdown - Replies (2)

Linux Lite 5 is the only OS on my computer, but occasionally the GRUB screen shows during boot-up. I know how to make it show if I want it to - press SHIFT during booting - but I don't know of any reason that it is showing up now. Can I stop it from popping up? If so, how? Or is that a good idea?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Update: My post originally asked about getting Launcher apps to show up as I wanted. I have solved that on my own, although I recall doing that in a simpler way earlier. But I got 'er done, so that is no longer an issue for me.

got a new PC, 64bit, good bye to dead old pc, can linux lite run in this new PC
Posted by: kissbaby3 - 10-19-2020, 04:23 AM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (6)

one of the two  PC's bit the dust, got a new desktop PC 64bit, so right now , one linux PC and one windows 10 home in the house.
the new PC has a internal solid state drive and a 1 terabyte hard drive, windows 10 is installed on the SSD.

my question is can it be installed and run on this new computer "Lenovo IdeaCentre 510A Desktop - AMD Ryzen 5 3400G" ?.

i am not going to install it at this time on the new PC, i'm going to wait till after the warranty period is over.
so i am just wondering is all, can it run on it and how should i install it ?, because of the internal SSD drive.

here is the link to the desktop PC i purchased.

Setting up Canon MG3500 via wifi
Posted by: linuxbodger - 10-18-2020, 08:54 AM - Forum: Printing and Scanning - Replies (2)

Hi all

Have just started using LL (moved from Linux Mint after reading about it on Distrowatch) and love it!

I have got to grips with most of it, mainly because it works so well OOTB and is a doddle to set up but...

I have an issue setting up my Canon MG3500 on wifi.

USB setup works fine - it adds the drivers and I can print.

Wifi does not. Sadly it worked fine on my other box which has Linux Mint on.

When I tried to do via wifi it refused to detect it until I allowed it the setup to modify the firewall to open up IPP and Msomethingsomething (not sure what).

I did this and it added the printer (actually it offered two options to select here, IPP and another). I have tried both of them and when I try and print a test page I get a CUPS server error.

I tried a direct IP address and that did not work.

I have looked around and other people seem to have the same issue and turning the firewall off seems to be an option. I was leery enough opening up the IPP and Mwhatever as I was not sure what the risk was here (I tried to move the firewall to a home profile but not sure if that worked or helped).

My questions:

Given that I have a cable modem with built in firewall, what is the risk of turning off the OS firewall as a matter of principle to allow things like this to work?

Can I turn the firewall off to install the printer and turn it back on again and turn it off just to print?

Cheers

LB

  I'm gone to MX Linux
Posted by: Lite Wise - 10-16-2020, 08:22 AM - Forum: Introductions - Replies (7)

Hi all, just installed Linux Lite on one of the older boxes around here.
Other boxes run Zorin and Mint Mate which is my primary pc.
Since I wanted to escape Ubuntu due to their Snap intro I tried on this old box Debian, Sparky, Open BSD but all gave me problems which I needed to solve manually.
Since I don't want to fix everything under the hood anymore (spoiled with Mint) I decided to give Lite a try.
Last option was Mint XFCE but I like Lite so it will stay  Wink
Hope to find interesting ideas again and probably some help if I want the easy way out.

Gr,

Erwin

  Hello World!
Posted by: Jim2029 - 10-16-2020, 03:28 AM - Forum: Introductions - No Replies

So I've dabbled with Linux a little in the past, but never switched permanently. After having 4 paid copies of Windows 10 Pro de-activate on me I'm done. I should have done this after the second time. But I was stupid. What sucks is most of my steam library is Windows Games, but some work under Linux with Steam's "fixes". I've installed Wine to try some other games with. I mainly Play 7 Days To Die which has Linux support, but I get a little lag, but thats expected from what I've been reading. I'm on LinuxLite 5.2rc1 for now as when the new Ryzen chips drop next month I'll be building a new system and selling this old z97 based machine (i7-4790k).
I'm sure I'll be asking questions in the support thread. But so far everything is working fine. Dual monitors and all.

  Another new Linux Lite user
Posted by: Swamp Rat - 10-15-2020, 02:03 AM - Forum: Introductions - Replies (7)

Greetings, fellow Linux Lite users,

I am a retired advertising and architectural photographer in my late 70's living in Midwest USA.

Although I had heard of Linux for years before, I got my first exposure to Linux 6 1/2 years ago, when Microaquish abandoned Windows XP. I had then an old Pentiom II desktop which was too wimpy for Windows 7, so I decided to load Lubuntu 12.04 onto it, to see what Linux was like. Within one week, I was doing everything on that computer. Then it got replaced with a Pentium 4, which went through every Lubuntu LTS version through 18.04.

Since I wasn't thrilled with Lubuntu 20.04, I tried a few other distros until I found Linux Lite. Tried it, liked it, and stayed with it for the past couple of months. Now I think I have almost the perfect computer OS for me. The 5-year support is wonderful, and the OS is superb.

I have added a few programs that aren't included normally and have made this OS almost exactly what I would make it if I knew how to do all that gets it to that point of nearly perfect. Maybe a few more tweaks will get it to perfection for me.

I am looking forward to continued happy computing with Linux Lite.
