Display stuck @640 x 480 following LL installation: how do I fix it?
Posted by: m654321 - 08-21-2019, 04:39 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (8)

Got given an old laptop today for free, i.e. a Packard-Bell Easynote MX-37 (dual-core CPU @1.47GHz, 2GB RAM)
First thing I did was remove HDD (Vista installed), replaced with an SSD.

LL3.8 (32-bit) wouldn't install onto the SSD, using conventional methods: tried both USB pendrive & DVD installation methods, selecting boot order from PC Settings. Both failed (even though found later that USB & DVD drives do work)

So, I installed LL3.8 onto the SSD using another machine, but without doing the updates on that machine. Then took SSD out of this machine & installed back into the Packard-Bell, rebooted and voila! It worked, BUT ...  the screen resolution is stuck on 640 x 480 resolution with no other choices available from the Display Settings - as you can see from the screenshots this resolution is too large:

I then ran 'Install Updates', but this did not resolve the issue  :-[

Any ideas folks, on how to resolve this ?

  Tips for buying hardware?
Posted by: MS - 08-21-2019, 05:28 AM - Forum: Off Topic - Replies (24)

Do you have any tips when it comes to buying hardware?

I have a rule, which majority of times seems relevant to me not only in terms of choosing the hardware, but for any kind of consumerism in general. It is that all things relevant for life are at comparably reasonable prices, while supplementary observation is that only things superfluous are rare and pricey. Do you agree with it?

What about buying new versus used? Personally, I tend to go for the new, but I know a lot of people - both when it comes to buying, say, a car as much as a computer - would tell it is a squandering solution, making one have qualitatively less for as much or even more money.

Laptops themselves are kind of a controversial choice. In my view, "gaming laptop" is an oxymoron, at least compared to desktops, but still, I am very much a dedicated laptop user. Nonetheless, I am not very much a dedicated gamer. I know people, though, who would always go for a desktop.

Wonder how - or rather, when - the world of streaming services will impact the customer preferences when it comes to buying hardware. Wonder if desktops will actually ever become marginal.

Is there any way to run 64bit OS on 32bit system
Posted by: minesheep - 08-20-2019, 09:10 PM - Forum: Off Topic - Replies (7)

Is there any way to run=emulate 64bit OS on 32bit only hardware fast enough to boot it up. I know that it is extremely slow, but is it possible in any way to emulate 64bit OS faster by removing parts of it/making the emulation itself faster.

DisplayPort/HDMI Sound output disapears randomly on boot / wakeup
Posted by: TheDead - 08-20-2019, 12:15 PM - Forum: Sound - No Replies

Hi,

Audio comes from Intel i5-4xxx Graphics+Audio output on Display Port-to-HDMI cable.
No straight HDMI on PC, just DisplayPort is available.

I don't know how much an issue this is since it's my first time using an Intel CPU's graphics with HDMI audio from a displayPort (if the later matters) but...Randomly, Linux Lite stop "seeing" the HDMI "sound card" on boot or waking up from sleep.I tried unplugging the HDMI and plugging it back in to no avail when this happens.
Most of the time I can use the standard audio jack with headphones but when I need speaker output, have to reboot.
Maybe theres a "software" / terminal way to reset audio outputs?

Any news on the XFCE 4.14 Update?
Posted by: icedigger - 08-20-2019, 11:39 AM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (6)

With XFCE finally updating their desktop manager I was wonder if LL would be implementing this in the near future.

Some useful addons to it.

  Best Soundcard for Linux?
Posted by: icedigger - 08-19-2019, 11:33 PM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (2)

I'm thinking of upgrading from my onboard soundcard to the new EVGA soundcard.

https://www.evga.com/products/product.as...P1-AN01-KR

Is this supported in Linux?

If not what is the best soundcard that Linux supports?

I do love my audio.  Pairing with a set of Klipsch bookshelf speakers and some nice Sony Headphones.

full screen conky stock charts and quotes

This is a short video of a simple full screen conky for Linux Lite in action for viewing current stock market quotes and charts. It also shows the default conky-lite widget with shortened quotes and a fim chart viewer for Linux Lite. The video starts with a read me page and then begins the demonstration. You can download a copy of the conkyrc for this from the link below.

Have just bought a new USB pen drive and i wanted to install a Linux operating system on it and make it bootable. But after going to Synaptic Package Manager i was surprised to find that UNetbootin is not available? Is there any other software that is compatible with a Linux os out there i can use please?
